Norwegian outdoor specialist Norrøna has partnered with environmental organization Bellona to establish the Marine Restoration Center in Lofoten, aimed at restoring 5,000 square kilometers of lost kelp forests along Norway’s coast. Since the 1970s, extensive overfishing of sea urchin predators has led to the transformation of these kelp forests into barren sea urchin deserts. This shift has resulted in significant carbon loss, reduced biodiversity, and an annual decline of 50,000 tons in fish stocks. “Collaborating with Bellona is a natural choice,” says Norrøna CEO Jørgen Jørgensen. “As a company with strong ties to northern Norway and a commitment to high environmental standards, we feel a deep responsibility to support this restoration effort.” The center will act as a catalyst for research, technology development and partnerships turning ecological challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth. It will also support national climate and environmental targets. This initiative aligns with Norrøna’s Sustainability Roadmap, which sets ambitious goals for the company’s 100th anniversary in 2029, reinforcing its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation.
